A place to place all sorts.

Miracle – my diary after her birth up until her first birthday.

Jan 20th, 1991. Our daughter is born!

We arrived at the hospital and were immediately ushered into a side room on W……. Ward. It was obvious that my wife’s contractions had started again. After a lot of faffing around the doctor ordered that a caesarean should be undertaken as soon as possible. I left the room to go and telephone my mother-in-law. Whilst I was away, my wife asked a nurse attending her, for a bedpan, as she thought she needed to relieve herself. When the nurse placed the pan beneath my wife, out popped the baby in a little bag. A nurse quickly grabbed the sack the baby was born in, wrapped it in a cloth, and ran as fast as she could to the hospitals baby care unit. It was our daughter!

I remember walking back from telephoning along the hospital’s long corridor when a nurse, running very quickly, passed me, obviously carrying something. When the nurse saw me, she turned her head away. I remember thinking it odd at the time, not realising until later that she was carrying my newly born daughter. Arriving back at the room where my wife was, it quickly became apparent to me that the baby had been born. A nurse was cleaning up my wife and kept saying sorry. We feared the worse. This was not even 27 weeks into the pregnancy! We were left for quite some time before anyone came to see us to explain what was happening. Eventually a doctor came in and explained the baby, a girl, had been taken to the special baby care unit and was alive. They had put her on a ventilator and needed our consent to administer something called a ‘surfactant’ to help with her breathing (They didn’t give her this in the end as far I know). They told us that she was very poorly, had a very low birth weight, and that it would be a miracle if she survived. They asked us to sign the consent form but needed a name for the baby. We hadn’t really thought of any names apart from a few silly ones, so we said call her MIRACLE for now.

My wife’s parents and sister turned up. I asked my parents though not to visit today. My wife was admitted on to the ward. Later, we were allowed to go and look through the window of the room in the baby care unit where our daughterwas in an incubator. We both cried. She looked so small, so helpless. Plugged in to loads of machines there seemed to be wires everywhere.

I stayed with my wife during the evening but obviously wasn’t allowed to stay overnight on the ward, so I just slept in one of the waiting rooms.

Jan 21st Monday.

Miracle makes it through her first day! THANK YOU, LORD.

My wife is a lot better today and the main bleeding has stopped, and she is eating well. We went to see the baby twice today. The first time, at about 1pm, everything seemed fine – as well as could be hoped for. The second time was at 7.30pm when the baby had developed ‘Jaundice’ – apparently quite normal for premature babies. It just leaves you feeling for the baby. Everything else seems ok – I think they’re doing their best. Miracle’s temperature had risen during the night but is now normal.

Fasted all day.

SO FAR SO GOOD.

Dr S……. was back off his holiday and called in to see My wife, then went to see the baby and he was very re-assuring about her.

Lord, we believe You to uphold this one and sustain her. Lord, keep her alive we plead. Let her be normal in every way. We stand against any other influence on her life other than Your saving grace, in the Name of the Lord Jesus. We announce over this one JESUS IS LORD!

My parents visited and we all stayed overnight in the hospital. The nurses bought my parents some sandwiches and drinks.

Jan 22nd Tuesday.

Miracle is 2 days old – PRAISE THE LORD.

Miracle has been taken off the CPAP (ventilator) machine which is encouraging. She is now breathing on her own. The jaundice has subsided a little – so they have put her under a less intense light. She is having 15ml blood transfusion and then a feed of 0.5ml of mothers’ milk about 1.00am on Wednesday morning.

Overall, it’s all quite encouraging. Lord keep this going for Jesus’ sake and in Jesus’ name WE ASK IT (John 14 – Let not your hearts be troubled).

Jan 23rd Wednesday.

Miracle is 3 days old! THANK YOU, LORD.

Lord, we give this one to you. We place her into your hands, Father.

Miracle is still off the ventilator – she didn’t take too kindly having her mothers’ milk though, so they are stopping it for the time being and will try again later. She is having some ‘yellowy’ stuff to redress the PH level.

Lord keep her will to live alive! PLEASE LORD.

Jan 24th Thursday.

4 days old Miracle! JESUS!

Back on feed and up to 1.5ml/hour by the end of the day.

My wife came home today.

Fasted until dinner tonight for her to keep her will to live and to accept the food – Thank you Lord – It’s You that gives her life.

Miracle was weighed today – she was 1lb 12oz – a drop of 4oz on her birth weight.

Fasted until evening meal.

Jan 25th Friday.

5 DAYS OLD! GLORY!

X-ray this morning – put back on the ventilator – still on milk. They put a ‘line’ in her arm. Poor little girl – a taxing day today. My wife was very upset – Lord, for the sake of your holy name keep this baby alive!

Jan 26th Saturday.

She is 6 days old! God the giver: God the sustainer, God the healer.

Saw the doctor today who assured us that Miracle was doing very well. Confound all the doctors with this one Lord. Let her continue to do well and not get any infections or complaints. Lord keep us from getting complacent. Let our hearts be pure before you – for the sake of this one. Lord then let us yearn over our spiritual children as well. The daughter of a friend of ours, came to see Miracle this afternoon and one of our friends came in the evening.

Jan 27th Sunday.

What a Miracle! 1 WEEK OLD!

On the CPAP (ventilator) machine at level 3. Tolerating feed. Her feet look the same as Mum’s – big 2nd toes! Rang in the afternoon and she was being taken off CPAP and oxygen box but when we went in the evening, she was back on the ventilator at level 20. Temperature ok.

Fasted until supper time for her.

Jan 28th Monday.

The 8th day.

Weighed her today – she is 1lb 10oz! Lord believing for a weight increase by Thursday of 4oz to 1lb 14 oz. Still on the ventilator at level 25.

Lord keep her going! Please Lord keep her going.

My wife visited in the evening. The doctor was called – there was bile in her stomach, so they stopped her feed. Also, mucus in her lungs. Prayed against any infection – the nurse took a swab and sent it to be tested and said, ‘she’s got a long way to go yet’! To which My wife replied, ‘I know the Lord will do a miracle’.

Thank you, Lord. Her breathing was better, so they’ve lowered the ventilator from level 25 down to 15. JESUS.

My wife changed her miniature nappy tonight.

Jan 29th Tuesday

9 days old.

Not very happy with the ‘temp’ doctor today, she seems a bit slap-dash. Miracle off the ‘Phototherapy’ – in other words the jaundice level is low. Still on the ventilator. Lord believing for healing. You are working a miracle against infection.

Went to see solicitor again today to update him on all the latest developments.

Sent off a list for the prayer group to pray about: –

1) That God continues to give His miracle life.

2) That God confounds the doctors, as we pray against any infections or complications.

3) Pray against anymore medical mistakes being made.

‘Lord whatever we ask in your name’.

Jan 30th Wednesday.

Miracle is 10 days old! PRAISE GOD!

She is breathing air – but still on the ventilator. Changed the drug Aminophylline from intravenous to her feed tube. Temp ok. Generally, very stable – Lord keep it up, thank you. On 4ml of milk per hour by the end of the day. Weighed her again today and she’s put on 10grams! Thank you, Lord. She’s now 760gms. She was born 920gms, then went down to 750gms, and is now 760gms!

Jan 31st Thursday.

11 days old.

Still on ventilator at level 20 but on air. Weighed her again and she is 795gms an increase of 35gms! Thank you, Lord! Tolerating milk. We saw Dr H today and asked various questions. He commented that she had done remarkably well! (Little does he know). Lord, continue Your work on her.

Friday 1/2/91.

12 days old!

Lord keep us diligent in prayer even though all is going well. ‘It is at the time your defences are down that the enemy strikes’. Lord protect her.

Miracle is off the ‘drip’ and the ‘line’ in her arm has been taken out. She is now on her mother’s milk for food totally. Up to 7ml tonight. PLEASE LORD KEEP THIS ONE!

Saturday 2/2/91.

13 days old! Thank you, Lord! She’s yours Lord!

Moved from room 5 to room 2 (staff shortages), everything else moving on a pace. Fasted all day incl. no tea until we prayed with her late at night. My wife held her in her arms for the first time. They took her out of the incubator, still linked up to the ventilator, and put her into her mother’s arms for about 5 mins.

Mum’s first hug

Sunday 3/2/91 MIRACLE IS 2 WEEKS OLD! THANK YOU, FATHER.

She had a slight hiccup today when the tube into her lungs became blocked and her levels started to drop dramatically. But they managed to sort her out and she seems to have recovered okay.

Lord continue to give your life.

Monday 4/2/91 JESUS IS LORD!

Lots of tests on her today! They’re thinking she might have an infection! She has been given some extra blood (12ml). Apart from that she’s doing alright. Weighed in at 870gms (1lb 14oz).

Tuesday 5/2/91 16 days.

X-ray seems okay. Lumbar puncture is okay. LORD PROTECT HER. Saw Dr G, who says she’s doing very good but might have a slight infection.

Wednesday 6/2/91. Mummy’s birthday.

Happy Birthday mummy

Your healing grace too. We stand against anymore medical errors in the Name of Jesus. Father it is not through our doing, though we are Yours, we are even now seemingly still not fully alert, so Lord we rely on You Lord. Help us out of our passivity. Father please move.

Miracle makes steady progress over these fifteen days. Her feeds moved from being hourly to 2-3 hourly and eventually 4 hourlies. Monday 20/5/91

Health visitor came – Miracle seems very ‘sniffly’ and blocked up.

Weight 6lb 7oz.

Tuesday 21/5/91

Took Miracle to the doctors because we were concerned but the doctor simply said that is what babies have to put up with! Miracle was ‘dedicated’ at our churches evening group.

Wednesday 22/5/91

Miracle had a panic attack and was gasping for air. A friend drove Miracle and her mother to the hospital. The journey was a bit hair raising (panic driving). I phoned the hospital to alert them that Miracle was on her way so that would be ready, then went and prayed. Miracle was gasping for air and at one point went limp, but her mother was resuscitating her. Later she recovered but wasn’t quite herself.

FORGIVE ME,LORD, HAVE MERCY ON ME!

Weigh 6lb 11oz

Thursday 23/5/91

Miracle still not herself – staying in hospital for tests and observations!

Friday 24/5/91

Looking a lot better in herself but still has the sniffles – 6lb 12oz.

Saturday 25/5/91

The doctors think Miracle has an infection in her bladder!

Sunday 26/5/91 18 weeks old! 6lb 14oz – LORD-THANKYOU!

KEEP MOVING HER ON IN YOUR MIRACLE LIFE.

Still no results from the tests that she had.

Monday 27/5/91

The doctors thought that they might have to stick a needle into her bladder but what a relief that they didn’t need to in the end! THANKYOU LORD – we pray against all infections and complications in the Name of JESUS! THANKYOU LORD.

Doctor says that she can come home tomorrow! Amen! She now weighs 7lb – yeeha!

Never let my heart grow cold

Lord help me to love you with a love that never dies.

Set my heart ablaze with a burning desire

To see Jesus glorified, to see Jesus glorified.

Tuesday 28/5/91 – Miracle has come home! HALLELUJAH!

Wednesday 29/5/91

Miracle is doing fine – a little bit sniffly! Weighs 7lb 2oz now!

Friday 31/5/91

Pretty worrying time! Miracle is very sniffly and finds it hard to breathe, particularly when feeding. Generally, she is restless. My wife is pretty worn out and lacking in sleep. It’s just hard not to watch Miracle all of the time.

Lord anoint Miracle with Your peace and with your life. Keep her moving on from strength to strength. Father we You in the Name of Jesus that You heal Miracle of this complaint. We ask that You cause her to be able to breathe freely without struggling. We promise to bring this girl up to follow You. She is Yours, only we would ask, plead, that in Your mercy You continue to give her life, in JESUS NAME! AMEN!

A song/rap I wrote at the time: –

Hey everybody, listen to this rhyme

‘bout the cutest little girl you could ever find

Well, she’s a real beauty, she’s really sweet

Her name is Miracle and that’s pretty neat.

Well, she came into the world with a bit of a bang

The music started and the people sang

‘bout the Grace of God and His miracle power

And this little girl grew from hour to hour.

When she was born, she was only one pound ten

We wouldn’t wanna go through that again

But we got a great God in whom we got faith

Now she’s doing well, she’s really safe.

Well, we took to a meeting just the other night

We thought she might get a bit of a fright

But she ‘raved’ to the music and danced to the songs

Loved by the people and now she belongs!

Sunday 2/6/91

19 weeks old! THANKYOU LORD – keep healing her!

I think she is slowly improving.

Monday 3/6/91

Petrol fumes everywhere! Went down to the Lodge for the day!

Health visitor came – weighs 7lb 7oz

Thursday 6/6/91 Believing Lord for smiles!

Routine visit to the hospital – she’s doing really well! Weighs 7lb 9oz.

We’re still being cautious about taking her out because one or two people around where we live have chesty infections, although we do take her out for walks mainly around the local fields.

Saturday 8/6/91 DOING GREAT – PRAISE GOD!

Sunday 9/6/91 20 weeks old!

She’s a baby

And she’s ok

She cries all night

And she sleeps all day!

We both have immense feelings of love towards Miracle and count it such a privilege to have her! We just want to be with her all the time.

She’s probably the most famous baby in our church (about 1500 people) – in fact more people know who Miracle is than they know who I am!

Now, I’m not referred to by my name anymore – I am just known as Miracle’s dad! “Mum, whose that man you were talking to?” said one little boy to his mother.

“Oh, that’s Miracle’s dad,” she replied.

“Wow. She is so famous. Everyone knows Miracle.”

Monday 10/6/91

Health visitor came – 7lb 13oz

Tuesday 11/6/91

Getting a little worried as she hasn’t filled her nappy since Sunday – Prayed that God would make sure she is ok!

Wednesday 12/6/91

Filled her nappy in the night! THANKYOU LORD.

There is a need – baby hasn’t filled her nappy for almost three days!

We pray, and ask, and wait expectantly!

The prayer reaches the throne of God.

God summons one of his angels.

God gives the angel instructions

The angel leaves the throne of God and appears in our bedroom at night!

My wife has a thought: –

‘she remembers an incident when she was in hospital with baby Miracle.  A nurse put a little Vaseline on a thermomotor when placing it in Miracle’s back passage to take her temperature. Each time Miracle use to relieve herself. My wife then repeats this and ten minutes later Miracle relives herself. The angel leaves, mission accomplished.

Thursday 13/6/91

We just think that it is amazing that we’ve got a little baby girl – THANKYOU LORD – We love you Miracle – you’re amazing!

Friday 14/6/91

Miracle still seems to be having problems filling her nappy – she seems to strain and be in discomfort, but nothing happens!

Saturday 15/6/91

Still no smiles from Miracle!

Still no filling her nappy!

Phoned the doctor this morning – we tried the thermometer again but nothing yet.

Sunday 16/6/91

Miracle seems in more pain but it’s spasmodic – she was particularly in discomfort in the night and did a lot of crying – but she did do a very small mess!

FATHER – IN THE NAME OF JESUS – HEAL THIS LITTLE GIRL – CAUSE HER TO BE FREE FROM PAIN AND DISCOMFORT AND BRING YOUR HEALING GRACE PARTICULARLY TO HER BOWELS, INTESTINES AND STOMACH – WE ASK IN JESUS NAME. AMEN!

Miracle went to her first big church meeting – Sunday evening.

Monday 17/6/91

Miracle did a big mess in the night – PRAISE GOD.

Tuesday 18/6/91 8lb 3oz What a whopper!

Father in the Name of your son Jesus, I now ask that, whilst Miracle is doing well, we do not get caught out and lose ground which you in your mercy, have given to us. So, I pray that your mighty protection be on this one – she is yours Lord – AMEN!

Lord, I want to thank you for all your mercy to us! It’s absolutely amazing what has happened over these last few months We are so blessed now! Thank you for everything turning out okay and our prayer is that You continue to be merciful toward us. Keep your protection on all of us but particularly Miracle. Ever grateful to you Lord.

Lots of our friends have babies around at this time.

Wednesday 24/7/91

Took Miracle with us for her first time, out on the streets of Camden Town in London. Two friends got arrested for possessing a stolen cheque book which they had found! This meant we were in Snowhill police station until 4am trying to prove their innocence. Miracle seem to cope with the ordeal remarkedly well.

Wednesday 31/7/91

Went to Camden Town again. I sang my Miracle song to girls on the street, who probably thought I was mad, but it touched their hearts, and we had a great conversation.

Sunday 4/8/91 28 weeks old.

Miracle is doing just fine. She is not taking her feed to well, but her mum’s got it under control. Lots of smiles now and a girl we know has taught her to blow bubbles.

Sunday 1/9/91 32 weeks old! KEEP HER GOING, LORD.

Monday 2/9/91

Took a girl we know to London, and we all had a picnic in Hyde Park. It was a lovely sunny day with lots of people around – and ducks!

Miracle is so alert to everything around her. A little girl wandering along with her mother, stopped and asked her name, ‘Miracle’ we told her, and explained that she was born premature. ‘Is she an angel?’ the girl asked. ‘No, but she has an angel looking after her.’

Tuesday 3/9/91

Health visitor came – Miracle now weighs 11lb 8oz.

Wednesday 4/9/91

Took Miracle to meet her great Aunt & Uncle in Oxford.

Lord, thank you for how far Miracle has progressed and we acknowledge that it is your hand that has bought her this far. We pray, in the Name of our saviour Jesus, that you continue to protect her, to strengthen her, and keep her moving on. We stand against any complications or negligence in the Name of Jesus, and we rebuke any negative thoughts or worries. This one is yours, Lord. Do with her as you desire, only keep her in you. AMEN!

Sunday 6/10/91 37 weeks old!

We anointed Miracle with oil at our churches evening meeting. A little worried about her ears as she seems to be playing with them a lot and doesn’t seem to hear certain noises. WE STAND AGAINST ALL COMPLICATIONS IN THE NAME OF JESUS. WE STAND AGAINST ANY INFECTION NOW IN THE NAME OF JESUS. Lord, we hold to your promise, believing in your word, that Miracle will have no complications. Father, we hold to that and in faith trust you for a miracle in this child.

Wednesday 16/10/91

Miracle has a high temperature and doesn’t quite seem herself. She is off of her food – even orange flavoured sunshine breakfast!

Thursday 17/10/91

4am.

Called the doctor out as Miracle is very restless and crying a lot. She is not taking her feed and has a high temperature. However, by the time the doctor arrived she was fast asleep and looked fine!

8am.

Miracle wakes up covered in spots! We think that she has the measles. Which would account for the cough she has had, the high temperature, and going off her food. It might even account for her ear infection. The doctor came out again later and confirmed that has a measle type virus and that we should take extra special care of her, which of course we do anyway!

Friday 18/10/91

Generally ill with a high temperature.

Friday 18/10/91 to Monday 28/10/91

My wife stays in with her whilst she gets over this virus. I’m at work.

Tuesday 26/11/91 310 days old – 44 weeks!

Well, a lot has happened since I last wrote over a month ago. Miracle got over the measles and she has passed the hearing tests at the hospital.

Weighted 13lb 1oz on 22/10/91.

Wembley has come and gone.

Miracle is now crawling everywhere and into everything. She is eating lots of solid food as well, baked beans and Yorkie bars.

Earlier today she was stung by a wasp, which she put her hand on whilst crawling on the carpet. She screamed, understandably, and her little hand swelled up to twice the size. She has forgotten all about it now and her hand is back to normal.

Naughty wasp!

Wednesday 27/11/91

The health visitor came and is very happy with Miracle’s progress.

Weighed 14lb 5oz. That is over one stone in weight.

Friday 29/11/91

Miracle seems to be going down with a cold. At the moment it is very difficult for My wife as we have had workmen working close by, and now have them replacing our roof. So, lots of noise etc.

Saturday 30/11/91

Miracle has developed a cold but generally she is okay. She tries her hardest to get up and walk but not quite making it yet. Crawls everywhere and into everything but she is great.

Sunday 1/12/91 45 weeks old! Soon be one year. Amazing!

Bless the Lord, O my soul. For this miracle work which You have performed, counting not our sins against us. Lord, even now forgive us and lead us to walk blameless in Your sight.

Thursday 5/12/91

Miracle still has a cold. She has mastered pulling herself up on the furniture to stand up. Taking her out during the daytime whilst the workmen renew our roof.

Sunday 8/12/91. 46 weeks old.

Miracle is feeling the effects of teething and groaning a lot.

Monday 9/12/91

First time that we have left Miracle in the care of someone else since she came out of hospital so that her mum and dad could go out. It was great to out but it so nice to get back home to Miracle.

Wednesday 11/12/91

We all went to visit a friend in Northampton.

Sunday 15/12/91 47 weeks old.

We took the carry-cot pram top out of Miracle’s cot, so she is in there without anything now. Thus ensued a couple of sleepless nights. Well for her mum anyway!

Thursday 19/12/91

7.30pm BBC – Miracle Smith appears on T.V. along with her mum dancing.

The BBC did some filming at Wembley and included some of these in a programme about the Charismatic Church movement. We had about 10 minutes of the programme. Miracle was shown with her mum dancing on one of the shots.

Wednesday 25/12/91

We don’t currently celebrate xmas.

Miracle is fascinating everyone at the moment by lifting her hand up every time she meets someone, who in turn lift up a hand to her every time they see her.

AND SO, WE CAME TO THE END OF 1991 – THE YEAR OF THE BIRTH OF A MIRACLE. PRAISE GOD.

1/1/92 Happy New Year Miracle – Thank you, Lord.

2/1/92

Took Miracle to the hospital for her check-up – 14lb 10oz – not a vast increase since she was last weighed but all is well, and we’ve not got to take her again for another 3 months.

5/1/92 50 weeks old today.

Miracle has just about stopped lifting her hand up to everyone. Now she is in to waving at everyone. She also joins in with the songs at church, lifting up her arms and just beginning to clap her hands to the beat.

12/1/92 51 weeks old.

16/1/92

My parents came to visit Miracle (with presents) – we all went to Milton Keynes.

20/1/92 The day has arrived – MIRACLE IS ONE YEAR OLD. What an incredible Miracle she is. I just cried. THANK YOU, JESUS. We have pretty much prayed together every day in this last year for Miracle. Whatever happens in life, we ask LORD, that you always look after and care for our little girl. She is a miracle. SHE IS YOUR MIRACLE.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE BESTEST GIRL IN THE WHOLE WORLD.

The end.
